Plugging the gaps: additional insurance for removal and storage contractors

Specialist insurance group Basil Fry explores some of the most relevant ancillary policies for removal and storage businesses – and explains how they complement core insurance arrangements.

Removal and storage contractors typically focus their insurance arrangements on the core risks of their operations: damage to goods in transit, public liability exposures, employers’ liability, property damage, business interruption and vehicle insurance. These remain essential foundations. However, as removal businesses evolve and diversify their services, many are exposed to additional risks that are not fully addressed by standard insurance packages.

Ancillary insurance policies play an increasingly important role in protecting removal and storage contractors against modern operational, financial, and managerial risks. These covers are often comparatively low-cost, yet they can deliver significant value by protecting cash flow, supporting compliance, and safeguarding reputations when unexpected issues arise.

Cyber breach response insurance

Many operators are streamlining procedures and becoming more reliant on software and systems. Customer databases, billing platforms, HR systems, virtual surveys, route planning software and email communications all involve the handling and storage of sensitive data. This makes cyber risk a real and growing exposure for the sector.

Cyber breach response insurance provides access to specialist support and financial protection following a cyberattack or data breach. Cover typically includes IT forensic investigation, legal advice to manage regulatory obligations, and public relations support to mitigate reputational damage. Policies also usually cover the cost of notifying affected customers. Most cyber policies provide protection for both first-party and third-party losses, including business interruption, loss of revenue, defence costs, compensation claims, and potential fines relating to data protection breaches including GDPR investigations.

Commercial legal expenses insurance

Legal disputes can arise unexpectedly and, if unmanaged, can place serious financial pressure on a business. Commercial legal expenses insurance is designed to cover the cost of legal advice and representation in a wide range of common business disputes. For removal and storage contractors, this can include employment disputes, health and safety investigations, tax enquiries, and legal defence costs. Many policies also provide access to employment and health and safety document templates, as well as legal and tax helplines. Cover for contract disputes and debt recovery is often included and is highly recommended where storage services are provided.

Management liability insurance

As removal businesses grow, directors and senior managers assume greater responsibility and personal exposure. Management Liability insurance is designed to protect individuals in leadership roles, while also supporting the business where claims arise from management decisions or employment practices. The cover typically combines Directors’ & Officers’ Liability, Corporate Legal Liability, and Employment Practices Liability — providing a comprehensive solution that addresses personal, corporate, and people-management risks while supporting confident decision-making and long-term business stability.

Business travel and personal accident

Removal and storage contractors increasingly operate beyond local boundaries. International relocations, overseas site visits, and escorting high-value shipments can all require directors and employees to travel on business. Business travel and personal accident insurance are often arranged together under one policy, providing comprehensive protection for staff while travelling and on a 24-hour basis. Cover typically includes emergency medical expenses, repatriation, trip cancellation or delays, lost or stolen baggage, and personal accident benefits. For employers, this combined cover helps manage unexpected travel-related costs, supports employee welfare, and demonstrates a commitment to staff wellbeing and duty of care.

Professional indemnity insurance

Professional indemnity insurance becomes highly relevant when a business provides advice-based or administrative services alongside removals — for example, relocation consultancy, visa or immigration coordination, document management, or secure shredding services. In these situations, a client may suffer financial loss due to negligent advice, errors, or failures in professional services rather than physical damage. Professional indemnity insurance covers the cost of defending such claims and compensating customers for financial losses.

Engineering inspection agreements

While not an insurance policy, engineering inspection agreements are a vital risk management tool. Certain plant and machinery used by removal and storage contractors — such as forklift trucks, tail lifts, shutters and lifting equipment — require regular statutory inspection. Arranging inspections through specialist providers helps ensure legal compliance, safe operation and proper documentation, and can often be done at a lower cost than through equipment suppliers.

Conclusion

Ancillary insurance policies are not about replacing core covers, but about strengthening a removal or storage contractor’s overall risk management strategy. Cyber risks, legal disputes, management liabilities, travel exposures, personal accidents and advisory services all introduce vulnerabilities that can be expensive and disruptive if left uninsured. By investing in carefully selected ancillary policies, removal and storage contractors can protect their finances, their people, and their reputations. Speak with your insurance broker to find out which ancillary policies would be of benefit to your business.
