Self-storage operator Space Station has opened its 19th UK location in Stafford, transforming the historic former Bull Hill Electricity Works into a modern storage facility.
The new store spans more than 55,000 sq ft and strengthens Space Station’s growing portfolio across London, Birmingham, Berkshire, Shropshire and Northamptonshire. The Bull Hill building has been a Stafford landmark since 1895, reflecting the town’s long association with the electrical industry and a succession of major industrial names over more than a century.
Space Station Chief Executive Kevin Prince said the Stafford opening represents the next stage of the company’s expansion plan and responds to sustained demand for self-storage — particularly across the West Midlands. He added that the business hopes local residents and companies will value the way the operator has modernised a well-known historic site while bringing a new service to the area.
Commenting on broader market drivers, Mark White, Partner in the Real Estate team at Charles Russell Speechlys, said rising demand is being fuelled by urban density and smaller living spaces, especially within rented housing. He noted that flexible self-storage helps customers manage space constraints alongside more traditional needs such as moving home, downsizing and renovating. White also highlighted growing demand from smaller businesses seeking extra space, and observed that self-storage has remained resilient as an asset class in a challenging market, with potentially counter-cyclical demand and the ability for investors to pursue local strategies aligned to regional growth.
