OpenTech to acquire smart-lock specialist SAM Systems

OpenTech Alliance has signed a Letter of Intent to acquire Netherlands-based access technology company SAM Systems B.V., in a move that would expand its smart-lock offering for the self-storage sector.

The proposed transaction is expected to close in early Q4 2026 and would strengthen OpenTech’s presence in Europe while adding SAM Systems’ NFC-enabled latch lock to its portfolio.

Developed specifically for self storage, the wireless lock uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and NFC technology to provide smartphone-based access. OpenTech said the product is expected to be available through its ecosystem from Q1 2027, with a target price below US$100 per lock.

SAM Systems’ technology has been in use for more than eight years and is incorporated in thousands of devices. The lock is manufactured in Germany and features stainless-steel components and an IP55 water-resistance rating.

OpenTech CEO Robert A. Chiti said the self-storage market was moving beyond initial adoption of keyless access towards wider portfolio deployment, increasing demand for a choice of hardware and infrastructure.

OpenTech and SAM Systems will demonstrate the technology at the Self Storage Association Fall Conference & Trade Show in Las Vegas, followed by the FEDESSA Conference & Trade Show in Wiesbaden.

… and adds multi-factor authentication to self-storage access system

OpenTech Alliance has introduced keypad-based multi-factor authentication (MFA) for self-storage facilities using its INSOMNIAC CIA access-control system.

The new feature provides an additional identity check at selected property keypads. After entering their existing access code, tenants receive a one-time verification code by text message or email. This code must then be entered at the keypad before access is granted.

According to OpenTech, the extra verification is intended to reduce unauthorised entry involving shared, skimmed or otherwise compromised access codes. It also gives operators greater assurance that the person entering a facility is the tenant connected with the account or an authorised visitor.

The feature can be configured for individual properties and keypads. Operators may require MFA continuously or only during designated hours, enabling them to apply additional security at main entrances or during periods considered to present a higher risk.

Keypad-based MFA is now available to facilities using INSOMNIAC CIA, with existing customers able to contact OpenTech Support to activate it.

OpenTech has also introduced several other updates to its INSOMNIAC IoE platform. These include improved management of non-tenant records through the Manager Genie app, portfolio-level reporting within the IoE Control Center and a new interactive demonstration mode for SmartMotion alerts.
