The “blessed curse” of the Spanish market

Removals, storage, customs and relocations specialist Mudinmar explains how it is turning “Mediterranean Magnetism” into “Strategic Logistics”.

Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Greece occupy a unique – yet challenging – position on the European logistics map. To the rest of the world, they are the “promised land” of the Mediterranean. To those of us in the removals industry, they represent what we often call our “Blessed Curse”. By definition, we are the “land of imports”. Southern Europe has become the primary destination for global talent, digital nomads, and corporate relocations. However, “returning” those moves with exports is a complex, fragmented puzzle. This imbalance is the “curse” that has forced us to evolve from traditional movers into a holistic global service ecosystem.

The “magnet”: why everyone is heading south

Spain – along with its Mediterranean neighbours – offers a level of security that is increasingly rare. Beyond safety, there is the matter of time. Spain boasts a life expectancy nearing 84 years, one of the highest in the world, with Italy and Greece following closely behind. This longevity isn’t just a statistic; it’s a magnet for retirees and professionals seeking a quality of life that the North simply cannot replicate. We aren’t just moving furniture; we are moving people toward a longer, safer life.

The challenge: the housing gap and the storage pivot

This influx of people brings a significant challenge: the housing crisis. The demand for homes in major Spanish hubs has outstripped supply, leading to smaller living spaces and a desperate need for flexibility during the relocation process. After more than 35 years in the sector, Mudinmar realised that being “just a mover” wasn’t enough to solve the problems of a modern expat. In 2018, the company created a 360-degree relocation service, including specialist spin-offs: Relomar (visas, housing search, school finding), Relopet (pet transport), and Relocar (importing and registering foreign vehicles).

More recently, Mudinmar tackled the storage problem head-on, repurposing sea containers into high-security, flexible rental storage units. With two locations already operational and growing, the company is providing a vital buffer for clients caught in the gap between their arrival in Spain and finding a permanent home.

Mudinmar has opened a container self-storage site.

The “Blessed Curse” in practice

The “curse” of the Spanish market is that the community of expats living within our borders is far more concentrated than the community of Spaniards living abroad. This imbalance means that a traditional moving company model is destined to have empty trucks or high costs. To lead in this market, you must become a Global Service Provider. When a partner in the US, UK, or Asia sends an export to Mudinmar, they aren’t just hiring a destination agent; they are hiring a partner who can handle the car registration through Relocar, the customs through Amura, and the temporary storage of their goods in the container park. Mudinmar has become the strategic hub for its colleagues worldwide when it comes to shipments heading not just to mainland Spain, but to Portugal, the Balearic Islands, and the Canary Islands.

Commitment to the global network

Mudinmar has spent three decades refining its expertise in Spanish and Portuguese customs, understanding the specific nuances of the islands – territories that many companies find daunting. By specialising in the “difficult” parts of the move – the pets, the cars, the visas, and the long-term container storage – the company has turned the imbalance of its market into its greatest competitive advantage.

The “Blessed Curse” of the Mediterranean isn’t going away. People will continue to seek the safety, sun, and longevity of the Spanish coast. As long as they do, Mudinmar will continue to innovate, ensuring that while the flow of people may be one-sided, the quality of the service remains world-class.
