FEDEMAC calls on EU to recognise 19th May as Movers’ Day
FEDEMAC, the European moving federation, is urging the European Union to officially recognise 19 May as Movers’ Day, highlighting the vital role professional movers play across society.
“Movers do much more than transport furniture and boxes, and that deserves recognition,” said FEDEMAC President Bertl Durieux. He emphasised that movers support people during major life transitions, from difficult separations and international relocations to complex hospital and business moves, helping to reduce stress and ensure continuity.

The federation has formally contacted EU officials, including Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas, DG MOVE Director-General Magda Kopczyńska, and the Chair of the European Parliament Transport and Tourism Committee, Elissavet Vozemberg-Vrionidi, seeking support for official recognition. FEDEMAC says this would raise awareness of the profession and underline its importance to labour mobility and the smooth functioning of the single market.
The moving industry is often only visible on moving day itself, yet it plays a wider role in enabling people to relocate for work, supporting business growth and ensuring safe, efficient handling of complex moves across Europe.
Since its launch in 2024, Movers’ Day has grown into an international initiative. In 2025, 91 organisations from 31 countries participated, including 22 in Europe, reflecting growing pride and visibility in the profession. Companies mark the day by sharing stories and content that highlight the human side of moving and the expertise involved.
FEDEMAC says official EU recognition would give the profession greater visibility and acknowledge movers as essential contributors to a mobile, connected and competitive Europe.
“Recognition begins with visibility,” said Durieux. “Movers are skilled professionals who help Europe function smoothly every day.”
