Storage sites become hubs

Lock Stock Self Storage says its Crewe container storage site is increasingly being used as a mini-business park, as local firms look for alternatives to shops, warehouses and industrial units.

The site, on the corner of Catherine Street and Francis Street, opened in January and is now supporting a range of small businesses seeking secure, flexible and lower-cost space.

Steve Smith, owner of William James Carpets, uses three 20ft containers at the site after giving up the lease on his shop in March. He said the move had significantly reduced his overheads while still allowing him to operate the business as before, with samples taken directly to customers’ homes.

Lock Stock regional manager Richard Warner said many firms now use storage sites as practical alternatives to leased shops or warehouses. He said the company’s secure containers were particularly suitable for businesses that need accessible storage but do not require traditional premises.

Other users include roof and exterior cleaning business All Cleanze and Mike’s Constructions Group, which recently added a second container to store tools and materials.

Business owners said the site offered quick access, security and flexibility, while also creating opportunities to meet and speak with other local operators.

Lock Stock now operates more than 35 storage parks across North Wales, the north west, Shropshire and Staffordshire. The company has over 5,700 storage units, providing more than five million cubic feet of space.
