Hanson opens first purpose-built self-storage facility

Hanson Self Storage has opened its first purpose-built site in Huddersfield following a multimillion-pound investment.

The business has been launched by the team behind Hanson Logistics, which traces its roots back to 1846, and marks the company’s entry into the self-storage market.

The 73,000 sq ft facility has opened with around 500 units across three floors in its first phase, with capacity expected to increase to approximately 1,000 units when the site is fully fitted out.

Technology installed at the site includes NOKE access systems, AI-powered thermography and monitoring systems designed to support security, temperature control, air quality and safety. Staff will also be present on site around the clock.

The building incorporates a range of energy-efficiency measures, including low-power access control and lighting, EV charging and 64 solar panels, with space for additional panels in the future.

Hanson Self Storage has created five jobs so far and says it plans to expand to multiple locations over the next five years.

Paul Pheasey, Managing Director of Hanson Logistics, said the company had spent several years researching the international self-storage market before developing the site.

Site Manager Cat Smith said the new operation combined the group’s warehousing experience with investment in technology and customer service.
