Big Yellow Self Storage has opened a new six-storey flagship facility at Staples Corner in north-west London, replacing its previous store at the location, which operated for more than 25 years.
The development overlooks the Staples Corner roundabout and is situated close to the Edgware Road, M1, A5 and A406 North Circular. Its distinctive yellow exterior is illuminated at night, making the building a prominent addition to the local skyline.
The new facility provides 131,000 sq ft of self-storage space, together with 19 flexible offices. It has been designed to serve domestic customers, including people moving home or seeking additional space, as well as businesses requiring a combination of workspace and storage for stock, equipment and materials.
Security and access features include extended opening hours, individually alarmed storage rooms and externally monitored CCTV operating around the clock. An on-site team is available seven days a week.
Sustainability measures have also formed a significant part of the project. Designed by Mountford Pigott Architects, the building has achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating and an EPC A energy-performance rating.
Environmental features include a 200kWp solar photovoltaic array supported by battery storage, air-source heat pumps and water-saving technology. Electric vehicle charging points and cycle-parking facilities have also been installed.
Landscaping and habitat improvements include 55 newly planted trees, together with bird and bat boxes and designated insect habitats. According to Big Yellow, these measures have resulted in a biodiversity net gain of 374%.
The company said the new store represents the next stage in the development of its Staples Corner operation, while reflecting its wider focus on larger, more efficient and environmentally sustainable facilities. The combination of storage and flexible offices is intended particularly to support small businesses seeking adaptable premises in a well-connected part of London.
